Why SMP Is Not a Tattoo — Eight Concrete Differences
Different needle, different ink, different depth, different machine. Why a regular tattoo on the scalp goes blue, blurs, and ages badly.
Eight Concrete Differences
A standard tattoo on the scalp is a recognisably different procedure from SMP. The differences are not cosmetic — they are mechanical, chemical, and histological.
Needle Geometry
Tattoo needles cluster multiple points (typically 3–9) and deposit a continuous line. SMP needles are single, ultra-fine points designed to deposit a single isolated dot. Use a tattoo needle for SMP and you get connected smudges that no longer look like follicles.
Depth
Tattoos go to roughly 1.5–2 mm. SMP goes to 0.4 mm. The deeper a pigment sits, the more it spreads with time. A scalp tattoo at tattoo depth becomes blurry follicle-clusters over 3–5 years.
Pigment Composition
Tattoo inks are formulated for permanence in shape and stability of colour balance. They contain iron-oxide and other pigment compounds that fade selectively, leaving cool undertones. SMP pigments are carbon-based, designed to fade evenly through neutral grey to invisible.
Machine Speed
A tattoo machine runs slower with higher voltage to produce solid lines. An SMP device runs faster with lower voltage to deposit precise isolated pinpoints. The two are not interchangeable.
Scalp Anatomy Awareness
A trained SMP practitioner understands that scalp skin is thinner at the crown than at the temples, that vascular density varies across zones, and that follicle density patterns differ across ethnicities. A tattoo artist is rarely trained on any of this.
Consequences of the Wrong Choice
Scalp tattoos done incorrectly produce a recognisable pattern: solid blue-tinted patches, blurred edges, visibly oversized "dots" the size of a pencil tip. Once placed they are very difficult to correct — laser removal is partial at best.
How to Avoid It
Ask your practitioner: what brand of pigment? What depth (mm)? How many cartridges per session? What machine? If the answers are vague, walk away.
