What Is Scalp Micro Pigmentation (SMP)?

A complete primer on the non-surgical treatment that replicates the appearance of real hair follicles — what it is, who it works for, and what to expect.

What Is Scalp Micro Pigmentation?

Scalp Micro Pigmentation (SMP) is a non-surgical cosmetic procedure that deposits medical-grade pigment into the dermal layer of the scalp using ultra-fine micro-needles. Each dot replicates the appearance of a real hair follicle, creating the illusion of a fuller head of hair or a freshly shaved look.

Unlike traditional tattooing, SMP uses specialised equipment calibrated for the scalp’s unique skin structure. The needles are finer, the depth is shallower, and the pigments are formulated to remain stable without colour-shifting over time.

Who Is SMP For?

SMP is effective for both men and women experiencing hair loss at any stage. It is most commonly used for:

  • Receding hairlines (Norwood stages I–VII)
  • Crown thinning and diffuse hair loss
  • Complete baldness — creating a natural shaved-head look
  • Alopecia areata and other autoimmune conditions
  • Scar camouflage after hair transplant (FUT/FUE) or trauma
  • Women with thinning part lines or overall density loss

How Does the Procedure Work?

A typical SMP treatment is completed over 2–3 sessions, each spaced 7–10 days apart. This layered approach allows the practitioner to gradually build density and ensure natural-looking results.

  • Session 1 (2–4 hours): The foundation layer is applied. The practitioner maps the hairline, matches the pigment to your natural hair colour, and begins placing dots at a conservative density.
  • Session 2 (2–3 hours): Density is increased, darker tones are layered in, and any areas that faded slightly are reinforced.
  • Session 3 (1–2 hours, optional): Fine-tuning. Final adjustments to density, hairline softness, and colour balance.

Does It Look Natural?

When performed by a skilled practitioner, SMP is virtually undetectable — even at close range. The key to natural results lies in three factors:

  • Dot size and spacing: Each micro-dot is placed at a specific diameter (0.5–1.2mm) with irregular spacing that mimics real follicle distribution.
  • Colour matching: Pigments are custom-blended for each client’s skin tone, hair colour, and ethnicity.
  • Hairline design: A skilled practitioner creates a soft, age-appropriate hairline with natural irregularities — no straight lines.

How Long Does SMP Last?

SMP is a permanent treatment. The pigment is deposited into the dermal layer, which means it does not wash off. However, over a period of 4–6 years, the pigment may gradually lighten due to UV exposure, skin cell turnover, and the body’s immune response.

A simple refresh session (1–2 hours) every 4–6 years maintains the look. Many clients actually prefer this natural evolution, as it allows them to adjust their hairline or density as they age.

Is SMP Safe?

SMP is considered extremely safe. It is non-surgical, requires no anaesthesia (only topical numbing cream), and has no reported serious side effects. There is zero downtime — you can return to work the same day.

At VANC Clinic, we use single-use needles, medical-grade pigments, and follow strict EU health and safety protocols for every session.
